'Histories' scouts impact of kids in West.(Final)

Next month Sunstone Press will release "When We Were Young in the West -- True Histories of Childhood" edited by Richard Melzer.

Melzer tackles a subject that few historians have explored -- the impact that children have had on the American West, focusing on those coming to, and living in, New Mexico.

The editor, a history professor at the University of New Mexico's Valencia campus, uses a multicultural approach in covering the experiences of children who grew up in the years between the 1850s and the 1950s.

Among the children Melzer spotlights are Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who spent part of his youth at Fort Selden, Abelicio "Abe" Pena and his memories of growing up in San Mateo, Marion Sloan Russell and her adventure on the Santa Fe Trail and Lori Arviso Alvord, a Navajo who grew up in Crownpoint. …
