New Mexico Squad Sets Relay Record.(Final)

The New Mexico boys did it again Saturday, and this time they set a meet record at the 28th annual Great Southwest Track and Field Classic.

"We got the record, baby," shouted Eldorado's Mike Smiel to his 3,200-meter relay teammates after the race.

At the University of New Mexico's track stadium in the first running event of the day at the seven-state, regional, postseason high school meet, the state's "A" team clocked the eight-lap race in 7 minutes, 40.35 seconds.

The previous record, set in 2000 by an Oklahoma foursome, was 7:41.58. The same four New Mexico boys won the same event at last year's classic. …
