Three of the entities vying for a state license to run a planned horse racing track and casino in Hobbs are objecting to a late entry in the high-stakes race. They're asking the state Racing Commission to scratch Santa Fe entrepreneur Gerald Peters' application.

Peters' involvement in the Hobbs track raised eyebrows in April when he suddenly took over the entire project from Hobbs businessman Johnny Cope, who has a 1980s-era drug conviction that could have jeopardized the application. Cope says his decision to sell out to Peters was purely a financial one.

The three others hoping to land the racing license are staking their protest on the flimsy claim that Peters' application is "incomplete. …
