'Don Cristobal' seethes with darker passions

It's a class reunion when a troupe of puppeteers takes the stage Wednesday at the National Hispanic Cultural Center to present "The Portrait of Don Cristobal."

And it's an unlikely sort of puppet production, one fitting for more mature audiences.

Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, considered one of Spain's greatest poets of the 20th century, penned "Don Cristobal." Presented as farce, it embraces sexuality, violence and criminality in a disquieting fashion, but one the actors believe gives vent to darker passions unexplored in conventional theater.

"Because we're using puppets, we can go much further than we could if we were using human actors," said Michael Montenegro, who designed the puppets and directed the show. …
