Full-Day Kindergarten Marks Fourth Year.(Final)(Editorial)

EDITORIALS

It's one of the state's most progressive education reforms in years. In the fourth year of a five-year phase-in, full-day kindergarten will be part of the curriculum in fully 80 percent of the state's public schools as of next fall.

Data from elementary schools that have made the transition indicates that students enrolled in all-day kindergarten often make impressive gains in visual and auditory memory, knowledge of the alphabet, even basic writing skills. These youngest students also tend to get better nutrition thanks to participation in free breakfast and lunch programs. …
