New Mexico Lawmaker Casts His 12,000th Vote

SANTA FE -- Sen. Pete Domenici has joined the 12,000-vote club.

Domenici on Friday became just the 10th U.S. senator to have cast at least 12,000 votes, his office said.

Domenici's milestone prompted his Senate colleagues to give him a rousing ovation on the Senate floor.

"Wow," Domenici said later in a telephone interview. "The Senate doesn't give anybody ovations for very many things, but I guess the longevity of votes entitled me. It was wonderful, very moving."

Domenici, New Mexico's senior senator and most prominent Republican, was first elected in 1972 and is the state's longest serving senator. …
