UNM to Lead In Research On Brain.(Final)

Researchers say a $17.3 million expansion of a brain-imaging center will help make the University of New Mexico a world leader in the study of mental illnesses.

When completed in fall 2004, the center will house an array of imaging machines that will allow researchers to peer into the brain in a variety of ways.

"I don't know of any center that has this particular combination of equipment," said Yoshio Okada, director of the Center for Biomedical Research Excellence, one of three centers to be housed in the new complex.

Researchers will have tools for studying a range of injuries and disorders such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, strokes, and traumatic brain injury. …
