Cup Officials to Utilize Fields at Balloon Park.(State)

Sandia Cup officials haven't been afraid to adapt to the changing climate surrounding the soccer tournament scene.

Starting its 11th season with play at three sites today, the Sandia Cup will break in a dozen new fields at Balloon Fiesta Park, becoming the first event to use the complex for tournament play.

"We're really excited about the opportunity to use the new park," says David Melgaard, tournament director.

In recent years, competition dramatically has increased among different tournaments as local soccer clubs have realized this is a good way to raise money, says Bill Nordin, executive director of the Duke City Soccer League and a liaison to the Sandia Cup. …
