Students Celebrate Independence School.(West Side Journal)

Jesse Higginbotham and Dominic Steward had different reasons for transferring to Independence High, but they were both seeking the same end.

They say Rio Rancho Public Schools' alternative high school offers an educational environment tailored to students' needs -- a place where teachers can take the time to help, and a student doesn't have to worry that things are going too fast or too slow.

They're not alone.

The school's enrollment doubled from 250 in the 2001-02 school year to 500 this school year, said Principal Buck Glenn. He attributes that growth to a change in the school's curriculum this year. …
