With Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies looming, dozens of Santa Fe Public Schools students got a jump on things Friday by planting miniature American flags on the graves of veterans at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

The holiday, created in honor of those who gave their lives during the Civil War, traditionally marks the beginning of summer and ushers in the season of backyard barbecues, ballgames and other outdoor activities. But with the recent war in Iraq, Memorial Day and its attendant observances are likely to take on additional significance this year, particularly among those with family members or friends serving in the armed forces.
