Playas To Become A Training Center

The terrorist threat level in one small town in southwestern New Mexico is being set permanently at red, indicating a severe risk of attack.

In fact, attacks are guaranteed -- in a way.

Playas, a company town abandoned when the Phelps Dodge copper smelter shut down, is being sold to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to be used by New Mexico Tech as a terrorist response training ground.

Activities at the 1,840-acre town might include training Marines for urban warfare, re-creating terrorist pipeline bombings and studying the ways in which chemical and biological weapons could pass through a prototypical small American town. …
