Weekend Cited For Low Meeting Turnout

RUIDOSO -- Just one person spoke at a meeting of the Interstate Stream Commission here Thursday about an interstate water deal that is lowering Elephant Butte Reservoir by a few inches a day.

But the attendance does not mean interest in the issue has dwindled among people who recreate and earn their livings at New Mexico's largest body of water, an El Paso lawyer and regular Elephant Butte visitor said.

The water deal, stemming from severe drought, involves gradually releasing water to downstream farmers in New Mexico and Texas over the summer. The deal also will allow more water to be stored upstream on the Rio Grande, as well as providing some water for the endangered silvery minnow in the middle stretch of the river. …
