Historic Sandia Ranch Attracts Nothing But Trouble.(Final)

Its origin dates back to New Mexico's territorial days.

But some residents living near the old Sandia Ranch say the former sanitarium is attracting more trouble than history buffs.

They want it bulldozed.

A once-fabled stagecoach stop along the trail between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, Sandia Ranch is now a dilapidated, graffiti-covered den for drug dealers, drug users and wayward teens, residents say.

They expressed their frustration over the complex Thursday, after firefighters responded to the second fire there in a week.

"It's just gone downhill," said Jim Johnson, who has lived in the area off and on for decades. …
