The Los Alamos Public Schools board plans to decide next month whether to dismantle the district's smoking area erected for high school students.

During a work session Thursday, board member Loui Janecky said the public sees the smoking area off Orange Street as the district condoning smoking.

"After weighing all things, I think the proper thing to do is take down the smoking area," she said.

Under New Mexico law, a person has to be 18 to buy tobacco, although minors can legally use or possess it.

Three years ago, the district spent more than $10,100 to pave a 3-foot-by-85-foot area for high school smokers. …
