Before Riverdance, Mark Howard was training the best traditional Irish dancers in the world. Howard's choreography and vision keep stretching the bounds of the traditional and if he has his way, his Trinity Irish Dance Company will be around long after the Celtic craze has passed.

"We're trying to do for the Irish-American tradition what Alvin Ailey does for the African-American culture," Howard, who was on sabbatical in Wisconsin, said in a recent interview. "We are an American company with Irish roots. Half of what we do is pushing the boundaries of traditional Irish step dancing. To take an ethnic craft and reintroduce it as a performing art, that has been our contribution. …
