Moriarty Falls to St. Pius; Team's 1st State Visit Doesn't Pan Out


FARMINGTON -- It took all of three pitches for the Moriarty High baseball team to realize hitting was the order of the evening in Saturday's Class 4A state championship tilt.

St. Pius leadoff batter Luke Hopkins made that perfectly clear when he rocked a 1-1 fastball over the left-center field fence even before the fans at Ricketts Park had a chance to settle into their seats.

But knowing and doing are two different things. Moriarty didn't and suffered an uninspiring 8-3 setback to powerful St. Pius in Moriarty's first-ever appearance in a state title game.

Moriarty didn't get enough hits for a good hand of blackjack.

St. Pius ace Carlos Otero, who pitched seven innings the day before in a semifinal contest, came on in relief and fired five innings of no-hit baseball as the Fighting Pintos went down without a fight. …
