New Manager Will Control Supplies

Los Alamos National Laboratory and University of California officials announced a substantial restructuring of the lab's business systems on Tuesday designed to modernize LANL's financial management and create "cradle to grave" control for its supply chain.

"What we did today was to create two organizations out of one," Rich Marquez, LANL's deputy director for administration, explained on Tuesday. "What we are looking for in this is to basically get a more manageable span of control."

Following recent congressional criticism of its business management, media reports of property control failures and the Department of Energy's decision to invite for the first time competitive bids to run LANL, UC and lab managers have been working overtime to shore up LANL's business practices. …
