Track Hopefuls Want Peters Out of Race.(Journal North)

Three applicants for a proposed horse-racing track and casino in Hobbs ganged up Wednesday to oppose newcomer Jerry Peters of Santa Fe.

The applicants said Peters, the fourth and latest petitioner for a lucrative Hobbs racing and gambling operation, should be out of the running because his application to the state Racing Commission is incomplete.

But a lawyer for Peters -- a prominent art-gallery owner, restaurateur and real estate entrepreneur -- said Wednesday that Peters' late-April application is in fact the most complete of the batch.

"This whole thing is a bunch of lawsuits waiting to happen," commission chairman Jack Cole of Farmington said during the commission's meeting Wednesday in Albuquerque, referring to the Hobbs application tangle. …
