Hotel Occupancy Rates Down in April.(Journal North)

* Disappointing numbers blamed on war in Iraq, tax worries

Occupancy rates in Santa Fe and Albuquerque hotels and motels slumped for the second month in a row as tourists stayed home to watch the Iraq war on television and worry about taxes, the president of the New Mexico Lodging Association said.

"It's dismal... we've never recovered from September 11 (2001)," said Art Bouffard of the association.

April's occupancy rates in Santa Fe dropped 5.2 percentage points compared with April 2002 to 53 percent; in Albuquerque, occupancy rates in April were 60.4 percent, which is 5.8 percentage points below rates in April 2002. …
