New Mexicans Vie With 6 Other States

The 28th-annual Great Southwest Track and Field Classic could be the fastest version of the regional, postseason high school meet in many a year.

The competition at the University of New Mexico's track stadium starts today and Friday with the boys decathlon and girls heptathlon. The relays and individual running and field events are Saturday.

The meet features top boys and girls from a seven-state area: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and New Mexico.

"Last year, we had three boys go under 10.3 seconds in the 100-meter dash," says the Classic's general chairman, John Haaland. "This year, we have a boy (Texas' Ramonce Taylor) that could go over 25 feet in the long jump, and a girl (Alandra Sherman, also of Texas) who clocked 13. …
