A ninth-inning rally by the University of New Mexico fell just short Wednesday night as the Lobos dropped their opening-round game of the Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship at Isotopes Park.

The Brigham Young Cougars held on to beat UNM 7-6.

Brock Jacobsen's 435-foot homer to straight-away center field in BYU's seventh inning ruined what had been a nice UNM comeback.

Jacobsen broke a 5-all tie in the seventh with a mammoth two-run blast, sending the Cougars (29-22) to a game tonight against San Diego State, while UNM (34-25) will go against regular-season conference champion UNLV this afternoon, needing a win to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament. …
