In a recent national cartoon, an elderly crone of a woman interrogates a young expectant mother as to when she is due to foist upon the universe yet another gluttonous and egocentric consumer. Yes, one could say, it's a sign of the times.

But that jaded image wouldn't play at all in Cotton City, a small town in the state's boot heel.

There, every student in the 28-member Animas High School junior class came to the same conclusion when a classmate's family lost home and possessions in a fire. Without debate or question, without dissent, the students voted to give the family $2,000 -- all the money the students had worked a year to earn and had planned to put toward a senior trip and graduation expenses. …
