* Chipmaker says newer equipment an improvement despite expansion

Intel has given itself good grades in its newest environmental, health and safety report card for its New Mexico chip plant, but the company is also conducting a new assessment of the plant's emissions to update an older assessment that has become partly outdated.

In 2002, the year Intel's new environmental report details, Intel completed its $2 billion Fab 11X expansion and made headway on reducing waste at the plant.

The expansion, despite adding production capacity, helped the company either stabilize or reduce the amount of waste generated because equipment used in the plant expansion tends to be more efficient than older equipment, Intel reports. …
