Bob Gassaway is talking about cultural anthropology. Or maybe archaeology. At the very least, it's ancient history. He thinks he's talking about journalism, which he has taught for 16 years at the University of New Mexico. He began working in journalism when he was 17. He went on to a long career with The Associated Press. He knows the trade, and he thinks he's talking about it. But not really. He's actually talking about the Dark Ages. A long ago time when dinosaurs roamed the world.

"I guess I expect everybody to have a reasonably well-developed sense of shame," he says. "I was taught shame at a very early age. If you lie, cheat, steal -- that's something of which you must be ashamed. …
