EDITORIALS

If all goes smoothly, the Valles Caldera National Preserve this summer will finally be accessible to many more of those anxious to see it.

The preserve's board of trustees plans to open the area for hiking and fishing, most likely beginning next month. There will still be fees for these activities, but they will be reduced from the present $35, which covers only very limited hiking with a guide. Appropriately, the trustees are considering discounts for seniors, children and families. The idea also is to restrict Valles Caldera visitors to 150 a day.

Some might argue that public access should be less restricted, or that fees should be lower, even nonexistent. …
