Chamber Will Take Reading Program to School.(Final)

The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce plans to take its education crusade into the classroom next year, enlisting local professionals to tutor kindergartners in reading.

The program will be launched next year with 70 kindergarten students at Bel-Air Elementary on Candelaria west of San Mateo, and expand to other schools in low-income areas over the next four years, said chamber President Terri Cole at a news conference Monday afternoon.

Chamber officials say the Albuquerque program is modeled after one in Columbus, Ohio, which had a success rate of 93 percent of children reading at grade level by first grade. …
