Cell Towers Need More Stringent Review.(Final)(Editorial)

EDITORIALS Thinking about putting up a cellular tower? Better pick up a phone and dial up the New Mexico Historic Preservation Office.

The Federal Communications Commission, which licenses cell towers, requires that the effects on historic, archaeological and scenic surroundings of the prospective tower be surveyed.

But there seems to be faulty connections, at least in some parts of the state. Historic Preservation Officer Katherine Slick said the agency has been contacted only twice in the past two years about plans for towers in Taos County. Towers have sprouted in a much higher number during the same period. Slick has asked the FCC for a compliance audit. …
