St. Pius 4A Champs After 15 Year Gap in Title Play.(West Side Journal)

It's not like the St. Pius baseball program has faded into the background since the school's last state championship in 1988.

So why, in the aftermath of the Sartans' emotional 8-3 victory Saturday night over Moriarty -- a Class 4A title-clinching victory -- did it seem so natural to want to say that the Sartans are back?

Probably because for a program with as much history as St. Pius', a 15-year gap was an eternity to wait.

"We talked about that very thing on the bus, that we haven't won state in a long time," said senior outfielder Brad Culling.

St. Pius (21-7) beat Deming 7-3 in the semifinals Friday, then pounded Moriarty 8-3 for the title Saturday night at Farmington's Ricketts Park.

"It's an exciting feeling, knowing we came out and played the best baseball possible," said senior third-baseman Luke Hopkins. …
