Ann Simonds, 61, was diagnosed in 1999 with bilateral breast cancer.

Her doctors scheduled a double mastectomy, but she instead flew to Switzerland for treatment at the Paracelsus Klinik, which specializes in an alternative form of medicine popular in Europe but relatively unknown in the United States, biological medicine.

She returned with her body intact and, while far from out of the woods, she's feeling better than she's felt in years, she said after a recent check up at the Whole Life Clinic in Santa Fe. The clinic is one of only two biological medicine clinics in the United States.

Dr. Thomas Rau, the chief medical director and part owner of the Swiss clinic, spent a day in Santa Fe recently seeing Simonds and other patients at the Whole Life Clinic. …
