State: Turbine in wrong place.(Business Outlook)

SANTA FE -- The state Environment Department secretary has approved an air quality operating permit for a diesel turbine producing electricity in Las Vegas, N.M.

But Secretary Ron Curry said the Public Service Company of New Mexico should consider moving its power plant, which sits near homes.

"It's time for PNM to shut this plant down," Curry said in a statement.

Quoting complaints by Las Vegas residents, Curry said PNM should conclude -- both environmentally and business-wise -- that "this plant is just not worth it."

PNM has no plans to idle the turbine, said spokeswoman Amy Miller. "We still see it as an important piece of infrastructure for reliability in New Mexico. …
