State plans privacy guidelines.(Business Outlook)

The New Mexico Workers' Compensation Administration is proposing new guidelines to help doctors and insurers work within the new federal medical privacy rules.

"The federal rules place new, possibly confusing, limitations on doctors," Alan Varela, director of the Workers' Compensation Administration, said in a news release.

The federal medical privacy rules severly limit the information health care providers can disclose about patients to any other person or organization.

Workers' compensation is specifically exempted from the privacy provisions.

But, Varela said, he understands that doctors may need help sorting out the new requirements. …
