The University of New Mexico Press has recently published two books. One is Gary Soto's novel "Amnesia in a Republican County," a commentary on political correctness.

Soto's central -- and recurring -- character is Silver Mendez, a well-known Chicano poet who is now a visiting professor at a Baptist college in California. But Mendez's fame has plummeted in direct proportion to the popularity of the Republican Party. One day, Mendez is knocked unconscious. Revived, he knows he's suffering from amnesia but at the same time he realizes that he's having an affair with the college president and is aware of a thriving drug culture around the conservative college campus. …
