The Vortex production of British playwright Nick Darke's "The Dead Monkey" is a dark comedy indeed. As conceived by first-time director Thane Kenny and his cast, the play straddles the boundary between the normal and the insane and ends with unexpected cruelty and violence. It is not an easy play to perform or to watch.

Hank and Dolores Wandaback live in a bedraggled hovel on a California beach. Twenty years earlier he was a buff surfer, demonstrating his panache by hanging five with his pet monkey on his shoulder. Twenty years earlier she was a bikini babe susceptible to such allure. …
