College CD kicked off jazz keyboardist's career.(Final)

Who would have thought that the catalyst in anyone's musical career would be a record made in a college dorm room?

That was the turning point in the career of smooth jazz keyboardist Brian Culbertson.

The story goes back to 1994 when Culbertson -- in a dorm with three roommates -- cut a demo tape and sent it to a small record label.

"The guy said he loved it and told me, 'Can you do a whole record?' I was young, I said, 'Yeah, cool,' '' Culbertson recalled in a phone interview from his Los Angeles home.

"We had the mixing equipment. We had the computers. I had lot of synthesizer keyboard gear and an eight-track digital recorder for live instruments. …
