* Former N.M. governor hopes to reach the summit of Mount Everest this week

SANTA FE -- Former Gov. Gary Johnson sounded upbeat on Saturday as he got ready to go for the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.

"If everything goes according to plan, we will summit at 8 a.m. (Nepal time) on May 22," Johnson said in a satellite telephone interview from Everest base camp at 17,600 feet.

Johnson said his quest to climb Everest has "been textbook" so far.

"From my standpoint, it couldn't have worked out better to this point," said Johnson, who has been acclimating to Everest's thin air and high altitude since late March. …
