* Mass, procession bring a part of past to Old Town

Filipino tradition and culture came alive Saturday in Albuquerque's Old Town with the celebration of "Santacruzan" -- a grand religious pageant long held in the Southeast Asian country.

The Filipino American Association of New Mexico hosted the event, which was attended by dozens. It was highlighted by Mass at San Felipe de Neri Church, followed by a colorful procession around the historic plaza and finally song, dance and food.

Cities and villages across the Philippines celebrate Santacruzan this month.

"The reason we celebrate it in May is because, in the Philippines, May is the time for all the flowers to bloom all over the country," said 81-year-old Consuelo Zafra. …
