State Complies With Child Act

New Mexico's public school accountability plan has been found to be in compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

"One of the things New Mexico understands is how to deal with students in small communities," U.S. assistant secretary of education Robert Pasternack said after a presentation at Reginald Chavez Elementary School.

New Mexico is the 19th state to pass the requirements, based on a review of the state's plan by a peer evaluation group.

Under the plan, the state annually rates schools by performance on test scores. The next ratings are to be announced by Aug. …
