Menaul School head Michael Gaylor will step down from his post at the end of the school year, the chairman of the board of trustees announced.

In February, the school announced a tuition increase of 23 percent -- up $1,800 from $7,700 -- next year to offset a drop in donations and to keep the school open.

Gaylor, who joined the school five years ago as director of institutional advancement and was promoted to head of school in 2000, blamed the shortfall in donations on the economy, combined with the threat of war.

"Dr. Gaylor has done an outstanding job guiding Menaul through one of the most challenging times in its history," chairman John Ackerman said. …
