Herbalist to talk on plants' uses

Learn the medicinal properties of native plants today at the Petroglyph National Monument.

Clinical and field herbalist Beverly McFarland of Cedar Crest will show plants with healing properties and answer questions at the monument's visitors center from noon-4 p.m.

"I was surprised that a place that basically has sand for growing material supports that much life," she said. "There are dozen of things that can be used today (for medicinal purposes) that were used hundreds of years ago."

Spectacle pod, scorpion weed and wild tobacco are just a few of the plants with healing properties found at the monument, McFarland said. …
