Churches advertise contemporary worship services. Pastors talk about the need for young families within congregations. Events catered toward teenagers are commonplace.

In the midst of an emphasis on youth within many churches, how well do congregations minister to seniors?

Here are answers from a few area churches:

Focus on activities

Rio Rancho United Methodist Church, St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church and Rio Rancho United Methodist Church all offer special classes and groups for seniors. Rio Rancho United Methodist has a "Seasoned Citizens" group, which gathers for lunch and activities.

"It is our most-attended group as far as small groups go," said Pastor Gregg Armstrong.

Armstrong said the church just redesigned its senior ministries, also offering Sunday school classes and rides to church for those unable to drive. …
