Cajun musicians keep flame of culture's music burning

Before the whole Cajun craze took hold of American cuisine and music, fiddler/singer Michael Doucet helped start the band BeauSoleil.

That was more than a quarter century ago and BeauSoleil, a leader of Cajun music preservation, is still around.

BeauSoleil's endurance is a major reason why things Cajun have spread throughout the country, if not the world.

As a teenager, Doucet learned Cajun tunes for fun; they were what people in southern Louisiana then referred to as old people's music. Learning those tunes, he said, was intertwined with his search for cultural heroes. …
