At 4 feet, 10 inches and only 88 pounds, Hobbs' Sara Baker might well be the smallest human backboard in New Mexico tennis history.

She returns almost every kind of shot with unerring consistency. Baker is a moving backboard, at that.

She defeated Sandia freshman Anna Surviladze 6-0, 6-2 for the Class 5A girls singles title Thursday, marking the second year in a row for the diminutive Eagle.

"I guess last year, it was a lot closer," Baker said. "But this was great. I'm emotionally drained."

In 2002, she outlasted Anna's older sister, Nina, for the crown in a match that wasn't decided until a third-set tiebreaker. …
