Ex-Gov. Hopes To Conquer Everest

SANTA FE Former Gov. Gary Johnson is hoping to reach the 29,035-foot summit of Mount Everest next week if the weather cooperates.

Johnson, who has been acclimating to Everest's thin air and high altitude since late March, recently sent a mass e-mail to friends and family.

"Believe it or not, but the time has come to summit Everest," Johnson said in his e-mail, which was sent from an Internet cafe at Everest base camp at 17,600-feet.

Johnson said he and his team planned to set out from base camp this weekend, "subject to change because of weather," on a final five- to six-day trek up Everest, which is climbed in stages. …
