Ex-soldier Peter Dominic Stines began turning his life around, but it was too late for his health, too late to avoid injuring Sean Sheffield and too late to avoid prison.

He simply had driven drunk too often.

Bernalillo County District Judge James Blackmer sentenced Stines, 29, on Thursday to two years in prison on his conviction for driving while intoxicated and causing great bodily harm in an accident in April 2000. Stines had pleaded guilty to the charges.

Stines' blood-alcohol level at the time was .27, three times the legal limit for intoxication, and he subsequently had two more DWI arrests, including one conviction now on appeal. …
