Lawmakers Want More Patriot Missiles.(Final)

House lawmakers want to increase the number of Patriot missiles in the Army arsenal despite ongoing investigations of the weapon's performance during the war with Iraq.

The $400.5 billion 2004 defense authorization bill approved Wednesday by the House Armed Services Committee also places limits on the next round of base closures.

About $9.1 billion would be spent on missile defense, although the committee moved $282 million in spending slated for longer-term missile projects to current weapon systems. Committee member Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., said the funding is primarily for the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 system, used first in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom. …
