State may join lawmen's quest to verify the Kid's legend

Nearly 122 years after Billy the Kid's death, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation of the Kid and Gov. Bill Richardson has agreed to help.

The probe will focus on the Kid's escape from the Lincoln County jail on April 28, 1881, during which he killed two lawmen, said Steve Sederwall, a reserve officer for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

The Kid was being held in jail waiting to be hanged for the murder of Sheriff William Brady, one of the casualties of the "Lincoln County War."

Longtime Lincoln County Sheriff Tom Sullivan said he also wants to prove that then-Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett killed the Kid on July 14, 1881, in a Fort Sumner house, and the Kid was buried near there. But some claim Garrett shot the wrong man, and at least two other people surfaced later who claimed to have been the Kid, who went by the name William Bonney in the last years of his life. …
