*Exhibit features interesting young artists from northern New Mexico

The current exhibit of wood and sandstone figures by Ellen Shade and small oil paintings by Manolo Mondejar at the Fenix Gallery, Taos, is a welcome reminder that Georgia O'Keeffe was certainly not the last interesting young artist to live and work in the hinterlands of northern New Mexico.

Shade's chunky female figures carved and chiseled out of wood, sandstone or a combination of the two range from 1 to 3 feet in height. The wood pieces are often tinted yellow, blue, or greenish and, at their best, combine the elemental grace and power of objects from pre-history with the emotive force of Romanesque religious sculpture. …
