Los Alamos has a well-kept but totally unclassified secret: the Los Alamos Summer Concert Series.

Free Friday night shows in a local shopping center parking lot featuring a mix of national acts and local bands have become a welcome sign of summer up on The Hill. Local families bring the kids, dogs and a picnic dinner and stake out spots for their lawn chairs with a good view of the stage. The kids let off steam by dancing around and when the sun goes down and the music really cooks, some of the adults also get up and shake a tail feather.

The man responsible for providing this quality-of-life windfall to Los Alamos and White Rock for more than a decade is Russ Gordon, proprietor of Gordon's CDs, Tapes and Concerts. Over the years, musicians from blues great Eddy Clearwater to folksinger Ray Wylie Hubbard, Native American music's Bill Miller and bluegrass virtuoso Tony Furtado have been featured. Colombian jazzman Juan Carlos Quintero was among last year's acts, and local groups like the Los Alamos Big Band, South by Southwest and Jimmy Stadler and the Colliders are regulars on the program. …
