Acting Boss Choice Of UC President

Pete Nanos no longer has to "throw his hat into the ring" for consideration as the next permanent director of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The president of the University of California, which manages LANL, announced on Thursday plans to appoint Nanos the seventh permanent director of the nation's first nuclear weapons laboratory. Nanos has been acting director since Jan. 6.

"I had intended to conduct a national search for a new director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory," UC president Richard Atkinson told the university Board of Regents in San Francisco. "But Pete Nanos' superb performance over the last several months makes such a process unnecessary."

Nanos' appointment still requires the regents' final approval; they are expected to formally consider the action soon.

"I can think of no person better suited to lead this critical national security laboratory through the coming period and to preserve its standards of excellence," Atkinson was quoted in a news release as saying. …
