* Senior javelin thrower seeks to help La Cueva to seventh straight large-school team title

La Cueva senior Mike Nulk takes advice from his mentors, then molds those suggestions to fit him.

For instance, Nulk wasn't satisfied with his fifth-place finish in the javelin at last year's Class 5A boys track-and-field championships.

"I was disappointed with my finish, so I started weight-lifting to get stronger," said the 6-foot, 4-inch, 210-pound Bear. "And then I took a lot of advice from what different coaches have told me and combined them for me to get better. Now, I'm using my hips more."

Nulk, who won the city javelin title on May 3, has tossed the spear 184-8 this season. …
